Yo ho, yo ho, a writer’s life for me…

“Because what happens in your head affects everything else.” ~James Scott Bell; The Art of War for Writers.

How serious are you about your writing? How about getting published? In regards to anything in our life, it is a battle. If we want to achieve something, we have to fight for it. So it seems fitting that James Scott Bell would apply a war general’s thoughts on war to our journey to publication. Bell writes, “By bringing orderly principles to bear, [Sun Tzu] enabled generals to finally achieve clarity in planning for battle.”

Bell divides his book into three parts:

  • Reconnaissance: How we think and perceive ourselves and our writing
  • Tactics:  How we write and how well we do it
  • Strategy: How we take our stories beyond ourselves and into the world

It is my hope, as we study this “field manual” together,  we will achieve a certain degree of success on the battle field. That we might clarify our writer’s journey, the obstacles we face and how to overcome them.

We’ll do a chapter a week, beginning on Monday, January 9th. We have the whole week to discuss it so there is no pressure on what day. I’m looking forward to connecting and learning with you all.

Here’s to a New Year full of promise and empowerment.

I read the first chapter today. Very insightful! I liked the part about the difference between a hero and a fool. The hero works hard and the fool thinks it’ll all come to him. This is definitely one book I’ll return to over and over.

Yea! I am glad that you are liking the book thus far. I look forward to discussing it and seeing what others think of the book.
